The little things Movie Review

"ITS THE LITTLE THINGS JIMMY, ITS THE LITTLE THINGS THAT RIP US APART, ITS THE LITTLE THINGS THAT GET US CAUGHT.

True words from the mouth of DW( Denzel Washington)

I had been hyped to see this movie since I saw both Denzel Washington and Jared Leto cast in it but I was also hyped to see the story layout of a crime thriller. So did The Little Things disappoint?.. here is our review of it.

The Little things tells a story of a cat and mouse game which ends in webs of guilt, obsession and trauma exploits. The movie sees John Deacon ( Denzel Washington) a County sheriff who is suffering from a haunted trauma and personal issues teams up with a Detective Jimmy Baxter to solve a string of mysterious serial killings. They then set their sights on a creepy cunning man in Alberta Sparma who fits as their top suspect we later find out he is just a creepy crime bluff who testifies to crimes he never actually commits and he then messes with Detective Baxter's head which ends up in his untimely death. The movie ends with cryptic standpoint we never find out who killed the ladies.

Story wise the plot doesn't bring anything exciting, it's just like any neo noir crime thriller some say there is a comparison to David Finchers SEVEN. But who can you blame?🀷 The script of the movie was penned in 1993 so it maintains the elements of its time and doesn't bring anything we never seen before apart from the part that it never reveals a true antagonists infact it points to the fact that the main characters are all phantom antagonists.

Performance wise, Denzel Washington gave a big solid and authentic performance as a man who is haunted by his obsession and past and puts him in a wrong state. He snaps when Albert tries to mess with him which was kind of the only spring into action part of the movie. And then we have Rami Malek who I think is more of the central character in the movie who plays Detective Jimmy Baxter- a by the book cop determined on finding the killer. His determination turns to desperation and obsession which turns into trauma. I guess he should have listened to his bosses about hanging out with John Deacon as we see that people make the same kind of mistakes when they are put into the same or similar situation but I felt the plot made his character undercooked, it doesn't justify the reason of his transformation. As for Leto he did give a good and solid performance and really caught my eye with his creepiness and his usual stuff . Well it all ended with a wham from a shovel hit by Detective Baxter.

The film's tone is really slow, suspenseful, a little bit boring with some cryptic and psychological undertones and it does beg to answer the question of police brutality, people getting killed just because of mere suspicion or being a victim of the particular crime by police because of obsession or not being in the right mental state. Truth is The Little things should have focused on the bigger things like a very convincing and unfamiliar plot.  We wouldn't say it was bad and  wouldn't say it was really good but I did enjoy the suspense of it all and it definitely left me with a lot of questions at the ending than at the beginning of it. So yea, it was not completely disappointing you should see it.

Pros :

Strong character performance

Nice tone and film setting

Cons: familiar and unconvincing plot

Overjarring story

Nothing exciting enough apart from an unsolved serial killer
